Applies to: Dual Boiler.
How to fix 11
- Switch off at the wall immediately and let the machine cool for at least 60 minutes.
- Switch back on and watch the heat-up. If it reaches temperature normally and the code does not return, treat it as a one-off and descale as the manual describes.
- If it returns, technician sources point to a leaking steam probe seal, where steam heats the sensor cable and gives false overheat readings. Checking and replacing the probe o-rings means opening the machine, so it is a technician job.
- If the machine overheats again or steam pours from the group head at idle, a technician source says the triac board may be latched on. That is a board replacement, not a cleaning job.
- If the machine will not heat at all after an overheat, a technician source says a protective thermal fuse may have opened. Replacing it needs the machine opened up, so it is technician work.
A technician would check the probe seals and the triac, which means opening the machine. Do not keep running the machine with this code.
When to stop and call a repairer
Do not keep running a machine that repeats an overheat code. Latched heaters can boil dry and damage the boiler and wiring.

How to check the error log
Switch the machine off at the wall. Hold EXIT and MANUAL while switching the power back on to enter the self-check menu. Technician videos say it shows boiler level status (such as LLL for low and HHH for high) and temperatures in the order coffee boiler, steam boiler, group head. The same videos say the stored error codes (00 to 12, with a count for each) sit in a separate engineer menu, opened by holding 1 CUP and 2 CUP and pressing the power button. Breville does not document either menu, so treat these steps as unconfirmed.
Clear the log after a repair so you can tell whether the fault has really gone.
Beyond the fix
Tips and tricks
- Watch for steam leaking at the top of the steam boiler during heat-up, or a lid that is very hot after several minutes. Unplug and book a technician.technician video
- A probe and o-ring service kit is cited as the usual fix for leaks; the video shows disassembly, so it is for qualified people.technician video
- If the machine reads hotter than set, switch it off and unplug it at once to avoid a blown thermal fuse.technician video
Common mistakes
- Ignoring condensation and white deposits inside the lid, which signal leaks over the electronics.
- Descaling a leaking machine before the leak is fixed.

Questions
What does 11 mean on the Breville / Sage Dual Boiler?
Steam boiler overheating detected. The steam boiler and its pump got hotter than the controller asked for. Technician sources describe two possible causes: the heater kept running when it was told to stop (a triac on the power board latched on), or the sensor under-reads because of a leak or steam at the probe seal. The machine cuts power to protect itself, and a technician source says repeated overheating can open a thermal fuse. Code 11 is listed as the steam boiler overheating. Technician videos link steam overheating on this machine to a leaking probe seal (o-ring) and to a triac fault; we found no source that ties it to a refill problem.
Can I fix 11 myself?
DIY difficulty: hard. Switch off at the wall immediately and let the machine cool for at least 60 minutes. Switch back on and watch the heat-up. If it reaches temperature normally and the code does not return, treat it as a one-off and descale as the manual describes.

Is it worth repairing?
Depends on the cause and on prices Breville does not publish. Get a quote and compare it with a refurbished unit on an older machine.
11 during startup or during use?
Breville / Sage Dual Boilers report 11 any time. There is no reliable pattern to when it appears — treat any occurrence as real.
Can I keep using the machine with 11 showing?
Treat it as a stop-using signal: 11 marks a fault that can damage the machine (or worse) if you keep running it. Do the safe first steps below, then stop.
Will 11 clear on its own?
Rarely. A reset or power cycle is worth one try, but 11 with a "hard" difficulty rating almost always means a failed component that has to be replaced.
How long does the repair take?
This one is a bench repair for most owners — the teardown, test and reassembly are the bulk of the work, not the part itself.
