Coffee machine and appliance error codes for Australia
Error codes are the same worldwide. What changes in Australia is the model names, the brands you are likely to own, the mains supply and your repair rights. Start here, then search for the code you are seeing.

Breville and Sage: one company, two names
Breville is an Australian company, founded in 1932. In the UK and Europe the same machines are sold as Sage, because Newell Brands owns the Breville name there (see the Breville Australia warranty page and the Sage UK guarantee). The error codes are shown the same way on both.
Finding your model number. Australian retailers list the Barista Express as BES870 with a colour suffix such as BSS or BKS, while US listings call it BES870XL. Search by the BES number (for example BES870) and ignore the suffix. Your model is also printed on the base of the machine.

De’Longhi: the Magnifica descale light
De’Longhi Australia’s own FAQ says that on the Magnifica S the descale light blinks red, and that the descaling process takes about 45 minutes. Run it when the light comes on rather than waiting for a fault. De’Longhi codes and alarm messages are listed on the De’Longhi page.
Jura in Australia
Jura Australia lists a 25-month warranty and flat-rate pricing for out-of-warranty repairs on its premium service page; check the page for current terms. Jura’s own manuals define only Error 2 and Error 5 (the machine is too cold, so warm it to room temperature). Every other Jura error is listed with its source on the Jura page.
Sunbeam and other Australian brands
Sunbeam is an Australian brand (its Mixmaster was made in Australia from 1948). Its espresso machines do not use numbered error codes: they signal with lights and beeps, and the meaning differs by model. We have guides taken from Sunbeam’s own manuals for the EM5300 Barista Max, EMM7200, EMM2900, EMM4500 and EMM6500. We do not yet cover Smeg, Bosch, Westinghouse or Fisher & Paykel appliances, and will only add them when we can source the meanings, rather than guess.
If it breaks: your rights under the Australian Consumer Law
Consumer guarantees are separate from the manufacturer’s warranty. The ACCC states that rights may still apply to a product that is broken but out of warranty. There is no fixed number of years: how long a product should last depends on what is reasonable for that type of product, its price and how it was used. What you can ask for (repair, replacement or refund) depends on whether the problem is minor or major; the ACCC explains the options at repair, replace, refund, cancel and warranties. This is general information, not legal advice.
Repair quotes vary widely. For a sense of what is being advertised, Airtasker listings for coffee machine repair show jobs from roughly A$85 to A$500, but that is a range of advertised jobs, not a typical price.
Mains power
The nominal supply is 230 V at 50 Hz, with Type I plugs (AS/NZS 3112) and a standard 10 A rating; actual supply is often closer to 240 V. If a repair guide quotes electrical readings, check it is written for 230 V, and never open a machine while it is plugged in.
Two coffee facts
The flat white is claimed by both Australia and New Zealand, and its origin is disputed. Melbourne’s Pellegrini’s reportedly opened in 1954 and is often cited as one of the city’s first espresso bars.
