What these parts do

The grinder motor drives the burrs, and on some machines a separate motor doses or tamps the grounds. The board watches current or an encoder to confirm each one actually turned.

How they fail

The motor was told to run and did not turn, or turned too slowly. A foreign object between the burrs (a stone from the bean bag is the classic one), clumped roast debris or a seized motor all give the same code.

Safe checks first

  1. Unplug the machine, empty the bean hopper and look at the beans left at the bottom for stones or clumps.
  2. Vacuum the hopper outlet and grinder throat with a plastic nozzle. Never push metal into the burrs.
  3. Empty the grounds container and drip tray, refit both, and restart so the machine re-homes.
  4. If the grinder hums without turning once everything is clear, the motor is seized.

Appliances carry mains voltage. Unplug before opening anything, and stop where a code's own page tells you to.

Questions

How many codes involve grinders and dosing?

We cover 19 codes on grinders and dosing across 4 brands (Breville / Sage, Jura, Philips / Saeco, De'Longhi).

Can I fix these myself?

By our ratings, 14 are easy, 4 moderate and 1 hard. The cheap checks above clear a share of the easy and moderate ones; the hard ones usually need a part replaced.

Are any of these dangerous?

None are rated high severity, but unplug before you open anything: appliances carry mains voltage.
