The Breville / Sage Oracle shows this code with identical meaning and fix as the Oracle Touch. Full guide for ER04.
Applies to: Oracle.
How to fix Error 4
- Switch off at the wall and unplug. Leave the machine for an hour so any moisture dries, then try again. A short that clears after drying suggests a leak to find.
- Inspecting the steam boiler temperature sensor (NTC) plug and the wiring near the boiler means opening the machine, which is technician work. A technician would look for a wet patch, white scale trails or a perished o-ring around the probe.
- A technician would replace any leaking o-rings at the boiler fittings and sensor probes; the leak, not the sensor, may be the true fault.
- If the code persists after everything is dry, the steam boiler temperature sensor (NTC) needs replacing by a technician.
- Afterwards, clear the error log and run a full heat-up and a shot to confirm.
When to stop and call a repairer
If you see scorch marks, smell burning, or the machine trips your GFCI / RCD, stop: that is an electrical fault, not just a sensor.

How to check the error log
Leave the machine plugged in but switched off. Press and hold 1 CUP, 2 CUP and POWER together for at least one second. After the long beep the LCD shows the firmware version (starts with "Fr"). Press the SELECT dial once to open Error Storage, then rotate it to step through errors 1 to 32 and the stored count for each. Scroll past error 32 to "ErSt" and hold SELECT for 3 seconds to clear the log.
Clear the log after a repair so you can tell whether the fault has really gone.
Beyond the fix
Tips and tricks
- Limescale on boiler probes is a common cause of odd heating faults. Cleaning or replacing probes means opening the lid, so it is a job for a qualified technician.technician video
- Descale only through Settings and Descale Cycle, as the manual instructs. Breville's own descale solution is what a technician recommended on the touch models.technician video
- Never remove or empty the water tank mid-descale, and allow roughly 90 minutes. If the machine was just used, switch it off and let it cool for an hour first.manufacturer manual
Common mistakes
- Descaling any other way than Settings and Descale Cycle. The manual warns that damage to the machine could occur.
- Opening the lid to poke at wiring or probes on a mains-powered machine. Technicians treat that as qualified work.
Easily confused with
- The manual links non-stop pump running to highly filtered or distilled water and says to contact Breville if it persists. A technician also describes a machine stuck near 68 C with the pump running as a fill or probe scale problem.

Questions
What does Error 4 mean on the Breville / Sage Oracle?
Steam boiler temperature sensor short circuit during operation. The steam boiler temperature sensor (NTC) is reading as a short circuit: the board sees near-zero resistance, which a healthy sensor does not produce. Technician sources name water bridging the sensor contacts (a leak or steam at the probe seal) and a failed sensor as the likely causes. Because it happened during operation, heat or steam reaching the connector is a plausible cause. Breville does not publish this code table, so the meaning comes from third-party service tables.
Can I fix Error 4 myself?
DIY difficulty: hard. Switch off at the wall and unplug. Leave the machine for an hour so any moisture dries, then try again. A short that clears after drying suggests a leak to find. Inspecting the steam boiler temperature sensor (NTC) plug and the wiring near the boiler means opening the machine, which is technician work. Is it worth repairing?
Often yes, but Breville does not publish repair costs. If a leak has soaked the control board, get a quote before spending anything.
When does Error 4 typically show up?
Breville / Sage Oracles report Error 4 while brewing or steaming. That timing is a useful clue when narrowing the cause.
Can I keep using the machine with Error 4 showing?
Usually you can finish the drink you are making, but do not ignore it — the underlying fault rarely heals itself. Work through the cheap checks first.
Will Error 4 clear on its own?
Rarely. A reset or power cycle is worth one try, but Error 4 with a "hard" difficulty rating almost always means a failed component that has to be replaced.
How long does the repair take?
This one is a bench repair for most owners — the teardown, test and reassembly are the bulk of the work, not the part itself.
