Breville / Sage Oracle Error 6: temperature sensor open circuit (not detected)

Error 6 means: Coffee boiler temperature sensor lost during operation.

The Breville / Sage Oracle shows this code with identical meaning and fix as the Oracle Touch. Full guide for ER06.

Applies to: Oracle.

Short answerThe control board cannot read the coffee boiler temperature sensor (NTC). On this code the sensor reads as an open circuit: the wire has come off, the plug is loose or corroded, or the sensor itself has failed. Because it dropped out mid-cycle, a loose or heat-damaged connection is the most likely cause. Breville does not publish this code table, so the meaning comes from third-party service tables.

How to fix Error 6

  1. Switch the machine off at the wall, wait 60 seconds and switch it back on. A one-off reading glitch clears; a real open circuit comes straight back.
  2. Reaching the coffee boiler temperature sensor (NTC) plug means opening the machine, which is technician work. A technician would check that plug on the control board for corrosion or heat marks and test the sensor circuit. Tell them the code you see.
  3. Look under and around the machine, from the outside, for water trails. Moisture on a connector can read as an open or short circuit; a technician would find and fix the leak behind it, often a boiler o-ring or hose clip.
  4. If the code returns, the coffee boiler temperature sensor (NTC) or its wiring needs replacing by a technician.
  5. Afterwards, clear the stored error (see how to read the error log below) so you can tell whether it recurs.

When to stop and call a repairer

Stop and book service if you see water leaking, a burning smell or any scorch marks. Do not open the machine yourself.

Worth repairing?Often yes for a single sensor, but Breville does not publish repair costs. Get a quote first, especially on an older machine.

How to check the error log

Leave the machine plugged in but switched off. Press and hold 1 CUP, 2 CUP and POWER together for at least one second. After the long beep the LCD shows the firmware version (starts with "Fr"). Press the SELECT dial once to open Error Storage, then rotate it to step through errors 1 to 32 and the stored count for each. Scroll past error 32 to "ErSt" and hold SELECT for 3 seconds to clear the log.

Clear the log after a repair so you can tell whether the fault has really gone.

Beyond the fix

Did you knowA technician notes the brew boiler has two probes that rarely leak, though their brown plastic can crack when limescale fixes them firmly in place.

Tips and tricks

  • Use cold, filtered water. The manual says distilled or demineralised water may affect the taste of the coffee, and links non-stop pumping and wet steam to such water.manufacturer manual
  • Descale only through Settings and Descale Cycle, as the manual instructs. Breville's own descale solution is what a technician recommended on the touch models.technician video
  • Limescale on boiler probes is a common cause of odd heating faults. Cleaning or replacing probes means opening the lid, so it is a job for a qualified technician.technician video

Common mistakes

  • Descaling any other way than Settings and Descale Cycle. The manual warns that damage to the machine could occur.
  • Opening the lid to poke at wiring or probes on a mains-powered machine. Technicians treat that as qualified work.

Easily confused with

  • On the Barista Touch BES880, ER05 is reported as the milk jug sensor, not the coffee boiler. Check your model before following a Barista Touch guide.

Questions

What does Error 6 mean on the Breville / Sage Oracle?

Coffee boiler temperature sensor lost during operation. The control board cannot read the coffee boiler temperature sensor (NTC).

Can I fix Error 6 myself?

DIY difficulty: hard. Switch the machine off at the wall, wait 60 seconds and switch it back on. A one-off reading glitch clears; a real open circuit comes straight back. Reaching the coffee boiler temperature sensor (NTC) plug means opening the machine, which is technician work. A technician would check that plug on the control board for corrosion or heat marks and test the sensor circuit. Tell them the code you see.

How much does it cost to fix Error 6?

Not published by Breville. Ask an authorised service centre for a quote. Not published by Breville. Ask an authorised service centre for a quote.

Is it worth repairing?

Often yes for a single sensor, but Breville does not publish repair costs. Get a quote first, especially on an older machine.

When does Error 6 typically show up?

Breville / Sage Oracles report Error 6 while brewing or steaming. That timing is a useful clue when narrowing the cause.

Can I keep using the machine with Error 6 showing?

Usually you can finish the drink you are making, but do not ignore it — the underlying fault rarely heals itself. Work through the cheap checks first.

Will Error 6 clear on its own?

Rarely. A reset or power cycle is worth one try, but Error 6 with a "hard" difficulty rating almost always means a failed component that has to be replaced.

How long does the repair take?

This one is a bench repair for most owners — the teardown, test and reassembly are the bulk of the work, not the part itself.

How reliable is this page?Breville and Sage do not publish a table of error codes for these machines in the documents we found. The meanings on this page come from third-party repair references and owner reports, so treat them as lower confidence. If your machine shows a text alert, follow the on-screen text first. Model revisions can differ: if your machine behaves differently, tell us. See our editorial policy.
