De’Longhi Magnifica descale light: how to clear it

If you are wondering how to reset the descaling light on a De’Longhi Magnifica, we found no De’Longhi page that says how the light clears. The only route we could verify is a full descale, rinses included. This page gives the steps we could verify, and says plainly where we could not.

Before you start

We advise unplugging the machine before you take any part off or clean around the electrical areas.

Magnifica Evo: the documented procedure (about 30 minutes)

De’Longhi says the Evo cycle cannot be interrupted once it starts and must end with the full rinse. The descale light is red. Steps in our words:

  1. Hold the descale button for at least 5 seconds, until the light blinks fast.
  2. Empty the drip tray and grounds container. Empty the tank and remove the water filter if you have one.
  3. Pour in the descaler to level A, add water to level B, and set the 2 litre container under the outlets.
  4. Press the button to start. For about 15 minutes the machine alternates between pausing and dispensing.
  5. When the low-water light comes on, this stage is finished.
  6. First rinse: fill the tank to MAX, press the button, and let the rinse run by itself.
  7. Second rinse: fill the tank to MAX again, put the filter back if you use one, and press the button. The water comes out of the hot water spout.
  8. The pre-ground light coming on means the cycle is done. Empty the container and refill the tank.

If the tank was not filled to MAX during the rinses, the Evo asks for a third rinse.

If the light stays on

De’Longhi’s UK FAQ advice is to run the descale again using water only, and fill the tank to MAX for the last two rinses. Its US page also says to check that the black float in the water tank is present and moves, and that the hardness setting matches your local water.

Magnifica S

De’Longhi’s Australian FAQ says the red descale light blinks when descaling is due, and that the process takes about 45 minutes. The start sequence is similar to the Evo: empty the trays and tank, remove the filter, add descaler and water to the marked levels, and put a 2 litre container under the outlets.

If that is you on an Evo, the section above applies. For other models, see descale light stays on after descaling, and browse all De’Longhi guides. Australian readers can also see our Australia hub.

What we could not verify

Follow the printed manual for your exact model. If a step needs the machine opened, have a qualified technician do it. If the light is still on after a correct repeat, contact De’Longhi customer care.

Beyond the fix

Did you knowDe'Longhi says the Magnifica S descale light depends on water used and hardness setting. Its US FAQ gives about 45 minutes for the whole process.

Questions

Is there a reset button for the descale light?

We could not find an official reset button sequence for the Magnifica. We found no De’Longhi page that says how the light clears. Completing a full descale, both rinses included, is our reading of their steps. Finish the full cycle for your model rather than looking for a shortcut.

How long does descaling a Magnifica take?

De’Longhi gives about 30 minutes for the Magnifica Evo and about 45 minutes for the Magnifica S. Other models differ, so check the printed manual for yours.

Why does the descale light keep coming back?

De’Longhi says the light is triggered by how much water the machine has used and the water hardness setting you chose. For a Magnifica S that flags too often, the likely cause is a hardness setting that is too high for your local water. Set it to match your water.

Can I use any descaler?

De’Longhi says to use only its own descaler and names EcoDecalk. It warns that other products, or the wrong procedure, may void the guarantee.
