Jura troubleshooting

What your Jura is telling you, using the cause and remedy Jura itself states, plus the few things the manuals leave to customer support.

Models covered: the E8, ENA 8, Z10 and E6 only. We read the manuals for those four. The S, J, GIGA and X lines have different message tables and we have not verified them, so do not assume this page applies to them. Message names and symbols vary a little by model.

Display messages

Message or symptomWhat Jura says it meansWhat to do
Fill water tankThe tank is empty and no drinks can be made.Refill it. Message shown with a full tank?
Empty grounds container or drip trayOne of them is full and drinks are blocked. The E8 and Z10 combine the two; the ENA 8 and E6 name the grounds container.Empty both. Message shown with an empty tray?
Drip tray not fittedThe tray is missing or not seated correctly.Fit it properly.
Fill bean containerThe beans have run out. Hot water and milk still work; specialty coffees do not.Add beans.
Too hotThe machine is too hot to begin a maintenance programme.Wait a few minutes, or draw a coffee or hot water to cool it.
Filter promptThe filter cartridge is used up.Replace it with the matching Jura cartridge.
Clean, descale or milk-system promptThe machine is asking for that programme. The E6 words these as clean, decalcify and rinse the milk system.Run it from the maintenance chapter of your manual.
Not enough ground coffee (Z10)Too little pre-ground coffee was added, so the drink stopped.Add more next time.
Spout is not fitted (Z10)The cover of the dual spout is missing.Refit it.

The Z10 and E6 ask for cleaning after 180 drinks or 80 switch-on rinses. We did not find a matching figure in the E8 or ENA 8 sections we read.

Symptoms

SymptomWhat Jura says it meansWhat to do
Weak froth, or milk sprayingThe milk spout is dirty.Run milk-system cleaning, then take the spout apart and rinse it. On the Z10 also check the spout cover is seated and the milk temperature is not set too high.
Coffee only dripsThe grind is too fine and is blocking the flow, or the water hardness setting is wrong.Set the grinder coarser (or use coarser pre-ground on the ENA 8 and Z10). Check the hardness setting and descale.
Dry grounds behind the grounds containerThe beans are producing more grounds than average.Lower the coffee strength or set a finer grind.
Little or no water or steam from the frother, very quiet pumpThe black connector is blocked by milk residue or limescale flakes.Remove the spout and clean the connector. Refit it by hand. The Z10 manual says no more than a quarter turn.
Fill water tank shown when the tank is full (E6), or not shown when it is empty (ENA 8, Z10)The E6 manual blames a trapped float. The ENA 8 and Z10 manuals blame heavy limescale in the tank.Descale the water tank.
Loud grinding noiseA foreign object is in the grinder.Contact customer support. Jura gives no do-it-yourself fix.

The manuals do not cover coffee that is too weak or too cold, leaks or brew-unit faults, so we do not give Jura-sourced advice on those.

Numbered errors

Jura’s manuals give a stated cause only for Error 2 and Error 5. Both mean the machine got too cold, so warm it to room temperature. The E6, ENA 8 and Z10 manuals say to switch off with the On/Off button and contact customer support. The E8 manual says to contact customer support. Other possible causes that Jura’s manuals do not list are on our Jura error pages, starting with Error 2. Treat those as less certain than the manuals.

Use only original Jura products

The E8 manual says to use only original Jura maintenance products and warns that others could damage the machine. It also rules out alkaline or alcohol-based cleaners, and says to fill the tank with fresh, cold, still water. The Z10 and E6 manuals say the same about tablets and milk system cleaner, and name liquid cleaners and vinegar as things to avoid. Whether other products work is outside what Jura says.

We advise: unplug the machine before opening or cleaning it. Any fault that persists, or any noise or leak, needs Jura customer support or a qualified technician. Do not interrupt a cleaning or descaling programme. Jura warns that interrupting descaling can damage the machine. Wipe descaler splashes off delicate surfaces such as marble, and keep it away from skin and eyes.

Beyond the fix

Did you knowJura lists the grounds container capacity in its manuals: about 16 portions on the E8 and E6, 20 on the Z10 and 40 on the GIGA. That counter is why the Empty message follows drink count, not a visual check.

Questions

What does Jura Error 2 mean?

Jura’s manuals say the machine has been exposed to prolonged cold and may have disabled heating for safety. Let it warm up at room temperature. Error 5 is described the same way. Our Error 2 page covers other possible causes that Jura’s manuals do not list.

What should I do about a Jura error number that is not 2 or 5?

The manuals we read give no cause for other numbers. The E6, ENA 8 and Z10 manuals say to switch the machine off with the On/Off button and contact customer support. The E8 manual says to contact customer support.

Can I descale a Jura with vinegar or a liquid descaler?

Jura says to use only its own products. The Z10 and E6 manuals limit you to Jura’s own tablets and milk system cleaner, and warn that liquid cleaners or vinegar may harm the machine or leave residues. The E8 manual also says to use only original Jura maintenance products.

Will my Jura ask for descaling if I use a filter?

With the matching Jura Smart filter cartridge in use (CLARIS Smart+ on the E8, CLEARYL Smart on the Z10 and E6), the manuals say the machine does not prompt for descaling. Replace the cartridge when the machine asks.
