The Breville / Sage Oracle shows this code with identical meaning and fix as the Oracle Touch. Full guide for ER12.
Applies to: Oracle.
How to fix Error 12
- Switch off at the wall and unplug. Leave the machine for an hour so any moisture dries, then try again. A short that clears after drying suggests a leak to find.
- Inspecting the group head temperature sensor (NTC) plug and the wiring near the boiler means opening the machine, which is technician work. A technician would look for a wet patch, white scale trails or a perished o-ring around the probe.
- A technician would replace any leaking o-rings at the boiler fittings and sensor probes; the leak, not the sensor, may be the true fault.
- If the code persists after everything is dry, the group head temperature sensor (NTC) needs replacing by a technician.
- Afterwards, clear the error log and run a full heat-up and a shot to confirm.
When to stop and call a repairer
If you see scorch marks, smell burning, or the machine trips your GFCI / RCD, stop: that is an electrical fault, not just a sensor.

How to check the error log
Leave the machine plugged in but switched off. Press and hold 1 CUP, 2 CUP and POWER together for at least one second. After the long beep the LCD shows the firmware version (starts with "Fr"). Press the SELECT dial once to open Error Storage, then rotate it to step through errors 1 to 32 and the stored count for each. Scroll past error 32 to "ErSt" and hold SELECT for 3 seconds to clear the log.
Clear the log after a repair so you can tell whether the fault has really gone.
Beyond the fix
Tips and tricks
- Do the clear-water backflush with the cleaning disc before switching off: build pressure for 20 seconds, release, repeat 5 times. It purges coffee oils and fines from the brew water path.manufacturer manual
- Wipe the group head and shower screen with a damp cloth, and periodically run hot water with the basket and portafilter in place but no coffee.manufacturer manual
- A technician video shows entering the service menu by holding the power button while plugging in; the method varies by machine build year. Note the stored errors, clear them and restart to see which return.technician video
Common mistakes
- Clearing or ignoring the stored error without noting which code and how often it appeared, which loses the best clue for a technician.
- Assuming one forum fix applies to every ER code. The same word-for-word code on a Barista Touch can point to a different part.
Easily confused with
- An on-screen Operation Error message is a generic fault notice in the manual, not one of these numbered codes. Check the service menu for the stored number.

Questions
What does Error 12 mean on the Breville / Sage Oracle?
Group head temperature sensor short circuit during operation. The group head temperature sensor (NTC) is reading as a short circuit: the board sees near-zero resistance, which a healthy sensor does not produce. Technician sources name water bridging the sensor contacts (a leak or steam at the probe seal) and a failed sensor as the likely causes. Because it happened during operation, heat or steam reaching the connector is a plausible cause. Breville does not publish this code table, so the meaning comes from third-party service tables.
Can I fix Error 12 myself?
DIY difficulty: hard. Switch off at the wall and unplug. Leave the machine for an hour so any moisture dries, then try again. A short that clears after drying suggests a leak to find. Inspecting the group head temperature sensor (NTC) plug and the wiring near the boiler means opening the machine, which is technician work. Is it worth repairing?
Often yes, but Breville does not publish repair costs. If a leak has soaked the control board, get a quote before spending anything.
When does Error 12 typically show up?
Breville / Sage Oracles report Error 12 while brewing or steaming. That timing is a useful clue when narrowing the cause.
Can I keep using the machine with Error 12 showing?
Usually you can finish the drink you are making, but do not ignore it — the underlying fault rarely heals itself. Work through the cheap checks first.
Will Error 12 clear on its own?
Rarely. A reset or power cycle is worth one try, but Error 12 with a "hard" difficulty rating almost always means a failed component that has to be replaced.
How long does the repair take?
This one is a bench repair for most owners — the teardown, test and reassembly are the bulk of the work, not the part itself.
