Breville / Sage Oracle Error 21: boiler water level or pump fault

Error 21 means: Steam boiler level probe mismatch detected.

Applies to: Oracle.

Short answerThe boiler water-level probe is not reporting what the controller expects: the boiler should be filling and the level probes should register water, and they do not. Scaled probes, a blocked inlet line, a fill pump that has stopped moving water, or a probe seal leak are the causes technician sources describe. Breville does not publish this code table, so the meaning comes from third-party service tables.

How to fix Error 21

  1. Tank full and seated, then power cycle and let the machine attempt a fill.
  2. Descale as the manual describes, including the steam boiler cycle if your model has one. Technician sources say scale on a level probe can read as "no water".
  3. Some service menus show a live boiler level reading while the pump runs. A technician would use it to see whether the probes register water.
  4. Cleaning the probes, replacing their o-rings and checking the inlet hose means opening the machine and working near mains voltage, so it is technician work.
  5. If the fill pump buzzes and no water reaches the boiler, a technician would check the pump.

The same steps as the list above, cheapest first. Stop as soon as the code clears.

When to stop and call a repairer

Water and mains electricity share the top of the boiler. Do not open the machine or touch the probes.

How to check the error log

Leave the machine plugged in but switched off. Press and hold 1 CUP, 2 CUP and POWER together for at least one second. After the long beep the LCD shows the firmware version (starts with "Fr"). Press the SELECT dial once to open Error Storage, then rotate it to step through errors 1 to 32 and the stored count for each. Scroll past error 32 to "ErSt" and hold SELECT for 3 seconds to clear the log.

Clear the log after a repair so you can tell whether the fault has really gone.

Beyond the fix

Did you knowThe Oracle service menu counts scale: the machine estimates scale level in parts per million using the steam boiler water level probes, per one owner video. That count is shown under the cup counter in the service menu.

Tips and tricks

  • Open the service menu and read the scale level and descale counters in the cup counter screens. Use them to judge how hard your water is on the machine.owner video
  • Use filtered water, not demineralised or distilled water, which the manual says can affect operation.manufacturer manual
  • Avoid descaling unless needed; technicians report descaling is the commonest trigger for steam boiler probe faults.technician video
  • A probe that misreads can leave the boiler unfilled or heating while empty; a technician checks probe condition and seals.technician video

Common mistakes

  • Descaling more often to fix a probe mismatch, which can make probe readings worse.
  • Clearing the error log and assuming the probe fault is solved.

Questions

What does Error 21 mean on the Breville / Sage Oracle?

Steam boiler level probe mismatch detected. The boiler water-level probe is not reporting what the controller expects: the boiler should be filling and the level probes should register water, and they do not. Can I fix Error 21 myself?

DIY difficulty: hard. Tank full and seated, then power cycle and let the machine attempt a fill. Descale as the manual describes, including the steam boiler cycle if your model has one. Technician sources say scale on a level probe can read as "no water".

How much does it cost to fix Error 21?

Not published by Breville. Ask an authorised service centre for a quote. Not published by Breville. Ask an authorised service centre for a quote.

Is it worth repairing?

Often yes, but Breville does not publish part or repair costs. Ask for a quote.

Error 21 during startup or during use?

Breville / Sage Oracles report Error 21 any time. There is no reliable pattern to when it appears — treat any occurrence as real.

Can I keep using the machine with Error 21 showing?

Usually you can finish the drink you are making, but do not ignore it — the underlying fault rarely heals itself. Work through the cheap checks first.

Will Error 21 clear on its own?

Rarely. A reset or power cycle is worth one try, but Error 21 with a "hard" difficulty rating almost always means a failed component that has to be replaced.

How long does the repair take?

This one is a bench repair for most owners — the teardown, test and reassembly are the bulk of the work, not the part itself.

How reliable is this page?Breville and Sage do not publish a table of error codes for these machines in the documents we found. The meanings on this page come from third-party repair references and owner reports, so treat them as lower confidence. If your machine shows a text alert, follow the on-screen text first.
