Breville / Sage Oracle Error 24: boiler water level or pump fault

Error 24 means: Coffee boiler level probe fault (unconfirmed; probes are documented on the steam boiler).

The Breville / Sage Oracle shows this code with identical meaning and fix as the Oracle Touch. Full guide for ER24.

Applies to: Oracle.

Short answerThe boiler water-level probe is not reporting what the controller expects: the boiler should be filling and the level probes should register water, and they do not. Scaled probes, a blocked inlet line, a fill pump that has stopped moving water, or a probe seal leak are the causes technician sources describe. Breville does not publish this code table, so the meaning comes from third-party service tables. Error 24 is listed in third-party tables as a coffee boiler water level probe fault. We could not confirm that mapping: the technician videos we read describe the three level probes (high, low and ground) in the steam boiler, not the coffee boiler, and older and newer Oracle units may differ.

How to fix Error 24

  1. Tank full and seated, then power cycle and let the machine attempt a fill.
  2. Descale as the manual describes, including the steam boiler cycle if your model has one. Technician sources say scale on a level probe can read as "no water".
  3. Some service menus show a live boiler level reading while the pump runs. A technician would use it to see whether the probes register water.
  4. Cleaning the probes, replacing their o-rings and checking the inlet hose means opening the machine and working near mains voltage, so it is technician work.
  5. If the fill pump buzzes and no water reaches the boiler, a technician would check the pump.

Descale as the manual describes and restart once. If the code returns, contact Breville or an authorised service centre and give them the code; checking probes means opening the machine and is technician work.

When to stop and call a repairer

Water and mains electricity share the top of the boiler. Do not open the machine or touch the probes.

How to check the error log

Leave the machine plugged in but switched off. Press and hold 1 CUP, 2 CUP and POWER together for at least one second. After the long beep the LCD shows the firmware version (starts with "Fr"). Press the SELECT dial once to open Error Storage, then rotate it to step through errors 1 to 32 and the stored count for each. Scroll past error 32 to "ErSt" and hold SELECT for 3 seconds to clear the log.

Clear the log after a repair so you can tell whether the fault has really gone.

Beyond the fix

Did you knowBreville's booklet warns that the water tank should never be removed or completely emptied during descaling.

Tips and tricks

  • Use the machine's descale cycle on schedule and do not remove or empty the tank during it.manufacturer manual
  • Clear the stored error in the service menu and restart; if it returns, a technician should check the probes and connections.technician video

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a level probe fault always means an empty tank; probes can misread through scale or residue.

Easily confused with

  • Our page lists ER21 as the steam boiler high level probe fault. The sources we read describe probes only in the steam boiler, so confirm which boiler is meant before ordering parts.

Questions

What does Error 24 mean on the Breville / Sage Oracle?

Coffee boiler level probe fault (unconfirmed; probes are documented on the steam boiler). Can I fix Error 24 myself?

DIY difficulty: hard. Tank full and seated, then power cycle and let the machine attempt a fill. Descale as the manual describes, including the steam boiler cycle if your model has one. Technician sources say scale on a level probe can read as "no water".

How much does it cost to fix Error 24?

Not published by Breville. Ask an authorised service centre for a quote. Not published by Breville. Ask an authorised service centre for a quote.

Is it worth repairing?

Often yes, but Breville does not publish part or repair costs. Ask for a quote.

When does Error 24 typically show up?

Breville / Sage Oracles report Error 24 any time. There is no reliable pattern to when it appears — treat any occurrence as real.

Can I keep using the machine with Error 24 showing?

Usually you can finish the drink you are making, but do not ignore it — the underlying fault rarely heals itself. Work through the cheap checks first.

Will Error 24 clear on its own?

Rarely. A reset or power cycle is worth one try, but Error 24 with a "hard" difficulty rating almost always means a failed component that has to be replaced.

How long does the repair take?

This one is a bench repair for most owners — the teardown, test and reassembly are the bulk of the work, not the part itself.

How reliable is this page?Breville and Sage do not publish a table of error codes for these machines in the documents we found. The meanings on this page come from third-party repair references and owner reports, so treat them as lower confidence. If your machine shows a text alert, follow the on-screen text first. Model revisions can differ: if your machine behaves differently, tell us. See our editorial policy.
