Breville / Sage Oracle Error 25: overheated above target temperature

Error 25 means: Coffee boiler overheated above target temperature.

The Breville / Sage Oracle shows this code with identical meaning and fix as the Oracle Touch. Full guide for ER25.

Applies to: Oracle.

Short answerThe coffee boiler and pump got hotter than the controller asked for. Technician sources describe two possible causes: the heater kept running when it was told to stop (a triac on the power board latched on), or the sensor under-reads because of a leak or steam at the probe seal. The machine cuts power to protect itself, and a technician source says repeated overheating can open a thermal fuse.

How to fix Error 25

  1. Switch off at the wall immediately and let the machine cool for at least 60 minutes.
  2. Switch back on and watch the heat-up. If it reaches temperature normally and the code does not return, treat it as a one-off and descale as the manual describes.
  3. If it returns, a technician would check the boiler fittings and sensor probe for leaks and replace perished o-rings.
  4. If the machine overheats again or steam pours from the group head at idle, a technician source says the triac board may be latched on. That is a board replacement, not a cleaning job.
  5. If the machine will not heat at all after an overheat, a technician source says a protective thermal fuse may have opened. Replacing it needs the machine opened up, so it is technician work.

When to stop and call a repairer

Do not keep running a machine that repeats an overheat code. Latched heaters can boil dry and damage the boiler and wiring.

How to check the error log

Leave the machine plugged in but switched off. Press and hold 1 CUP, 2 CUP and POWER together for at least one second. After the long beep the LCD shows the firmware version (starts with "Fr"). Press the SELECT dial once to open Error Storage, then rotate it to step through errors 1 to 32 and the stored count for each. Scroll past error 32 to "ErSt" and hold SELECT for 3 seconds to clear the log.

Clear the log after a repair so you can tell whether the fault has really gone.

Beyond the fix

Did you knowA BrewFix video explains that a failed triac can keep a heating element powered after the screen is off, and that leaking steam probes on older Oracle Touch units can wet the triac board above the boiler.

Tips and tricks

  • If the machine stays hot after switching off, or steam or hot water appears by itself, unplug it at the wall and call a technician.technician video
  • A plug-in energy meter can show whether the machine keeps drawing power while off.technician video
  • Look for water or scale around the top of the machine and report any leak; the source must be fixed too.technician video

Common mistakes

  • Leaving an overheating machine plugged in to see if the code clears.
  • Replacing the board without fixing the leak that wet it.

Easily confused with

  • ER26 and ER27 are the same over-temperature fault for the steam boiler and group head.

Questions

What does Error 25 mean on the Breville / Sage Oracle?

Coffee boiler overheated above target temperature. The coffee boiler and pump got hotter than the controller asked for. Technician sources describe two possible causes: the heater kept running when it was told to stop (a triac on the power board latched on), or the sensor under-reads because of a leak or steam at the probe seal. Can I fix Error 25 myself?

DIY difficulty: hard. Switch off at the wall immediately and let the machine cool for at least 60 minutes. Switch back on and watch the heat-up. If it reaches temperature normally and the code does not return, treat it as a one-off and descale as the manual describes.

How much does it cost to fix Error 25?

Is it worth repairing?

Depends on the cause and on prices Breville does not publish. Get a quote and compare it with a refurbished unit on an older machine.

Error 25 during startup or during use?

Breville / Sage Oracles report Error 25 any time. There is no reliable pattern to when it appears — treat any occurrence as real.

Can I keep using the machine with Error 25 showing?

Treat it as a stop-using signal: Error 25 marks a fault that can damage the machine (or worse) if you keep running it. Do the safe first steps below, then stop.

Will Error 25 clear on its own?

Rarely. A reset or power cycle is worth one try, but Error 25 with a "hard" difficulty rating almost always means a failed component that has to be replaced.

How long does the repair take?

This one is a bench repair for most owners — the teardown, test and reassembly are the bulk of the work, not the part itself.

How reliable is this page?Breville and Sage do not publish a table of error codes for these machines in the documents we found.
