Breville / Sage Oracle Error 30: grinder motor fault

Error 30 means: Grinder motor timed out during operation.

The Breville / Sage Oracle shows this code with identical meaning and fix as the Oracle Touch. Full guide for ER30.

Applies to: Oracle.

Short answerThe grinder ran longer than it should without finishing the dose. Breville's manuals describe thermal cut-outs and warn about oil and foreign objects in the grinder, so a jam from beans, stones or compacted grounds, or a grind setting so fine that the motor labours, are plausible causes. Breville does not publish this code table.

How to fix Error 30

  1. Let the machine sit for 30 to 60 minutes if the code mentions overheating. The Barista Touch manual says its thermal cut-out resets after cooling.
  2. Remove the hopper, empty it and check for a stone or a very oily, compacted bean layer at the burr throat.
  3. Clean the burrs and the chute with the brush, following the manual. Never wash burrs; moisture clogs them.
  4. Check the tamp fan / impeller under the burr is fitted and not stuck (Oracle models).
  5. Set the grind a little coarser, refit everything, and run a short grind with a small dose of beans.
  6. If the motor hums but does not turn with clean burrs, or the code returns, contact Breville or an authorised service centre. Do not open the machine.

How to check the error log

Leave the machine plugged in but switched off. Press and hold 1 CUP, 2 CUP and POWER together for at least one second. After the long beep the LCD shows the firmware version (starts with "Fr"). Press the SELECT dial once to open Error Storage, then rotate it to step through errors 1 to 32 and the stored count for each. Scroll past error 32 to "ErSt" and hold SELECT for 3 seconds to clear the log.

Clear the log after a repair so you can tell whether the fault has really gone.

Beyond the fix

Did you knowIn one repair video the grind outlet, which guides coffee towards the tamper, was packed with compacted grounds, so the grinder stopped after a second or two.

Tips and tricks

  • Clear the grind outlet with the supplied brush; a plastic cable tie is gentler than a screwdriver in a repairer's view.technician video
  • Refit the felt washer, impeller, burrs and washers in the right order after cleaning.technician video
  • Clear stored errors in the service menu and restart, because a stale fault can block the grinder after the jam is fixed.technician video

Common mistakes

  • Probing the chute with a metal tool near internal parts.
  • Forgetting to clear the stored error after cleaning.

Easily confused with

  • ER31 is the tamping motor timing out; a silent tamper before grinding is a clue in the repair video.

Questions

What does Error 30 mean on the Breville / Sage Oracle?

Grinder motor timed out during operation. The grinder ran longer than it should without finishing the dose. Breville's manuals describe thermal cut-outs and warn about oil and foreign objects in the grinder, so a jam from beans, stones or compacted grounds, or a grind setting so fine that the motor labours, are plausible causes. Breville does not publish this code table.

Can I fix Error 30 myself?

DIY difficulty: easy. Let the machine sit for 30 to 60 minutes if the code mentions overheating. The Barista Touch manual says its thermal cut-out resets after cooling. Remove the hopper, empty it and check for a stone or a very oily, compacted bean layer at the burr throat.

How much does it cost to fix Error 30?

Not published by Breville. Ask an authorised service centre for a quote. Not published by Breville. Ask an authorised service centre for a quote.

Is it worth repairing?

Clearing a jam is free. For a motor, ask for a quote.

When does Error 30 typically show up?

Breville / Sage Oracles report Error 30 while brewing or steaming. That timing is a useful clue when narrowing the cause.

Can I keep using the machine with Error 30 showing?

Generally yes — Error 30 is more of an annoyance than an emergency. Fix it when convenient; just do not let the cause sit for months.

Will Error 30 clear on its own?

Often, yes. The first step (let the machine sit for 30 to 60 minutes if the code mentions overheating. the barista touch manual says its thermal cut-out resets after cooling) clears a share of cases on its own. If the code comes straight back, the part is genuinely at fault.

How long does the repair take?

Fifteen to thirty minutes with basic tools, once you have the part.
