How to fix E18
- Remove the portafilter and wipe the tamper head and cradle with a dry cloth; oily buildup can make the tamper stick.
- Check the tamp fan is fitted correctly after any cleaning.
- Coarsen the grind slightly and retry.
- If the tamper jams mid-stroke every time, contact Breville or an authorised service centre. Do not open the machine.
Switch off, then check the grind chute and tamping area for packed grounds and clean as the manual describes. If the code returns, contact Breville Consumer Support. Do not open the machine.
When to stop and call a repairer
Keep fingers clear of the tamper cradle while it moves.

How to check the error log
Open Settings on the touch screen, then About the Machine, then Software version. On that screen tap each bottom corner of the screen several times. Go back to About the Machine and a new Service center mode entry appears. Open it to view the error log.
Clear the log after a repair so you can tell whether the fault has really gone.

Questions
What does E18 mean on the Breville / Sage Oracle Jet?
Tamping or dosing motor overcurrent from resistance or a jam (motor type unconfirmed). The tamping or dosing motor did not finish its travel in the time allowed. Dried coffee oils on the tamper head, a portafilter not seated in the cradle, or a very fine grind that packs hard are plausible reasons. Breville does not publish this code table, so the meaning comes from third-party service tables. E18 on the Oracle Jet is listed in a third-party table as a motor overcurrent from mechanical resistance or a jam. The table calls it an auger motor, but the Jet manual never mentions an auger, only a tamping fan and grind chute, so we cannot confirm which motor it means.
Can I fix E18 myself?
DIY difficulty: easy. Remove the portafilter and wipe the tamper head and cradle with a dry cloth; oily buildup can make the tamper stick. Check the tamp fan is fitted correctly after any cleaning.

Is it worth repairing?
Cleaning is free. For a motor, ask for a quote.
When does E18 typically show up?
Breville / Sage Oracle Jets report E18 any time. There is no reliable pattern to when it appears — treat any occurrence as real.
Can I keep using the machine with E18 showing?
Generally yes — E18 is more of an annoyance than an emergency. Fix it when convenient; just do not let the cause sit for months.
Will E18 clear on its own?
Often, yes. The first step (remove the portafilter and wipe the tamper head and cradle with a dry cloth; oily buildup can make the tamper stick) clears a share of cases on its own. If the code comes straight back, the part is genuinely at fault.
How long does the repair take?
Fifteen to thirty minutes with basic tools, once you have the part.
