Breville / Sage Oracle Touch ER05: temperature sensor open circuit (not detected)

ER05 means: Coffee boiler temperature sensor not detected at startup.

Same code, same fix on the Oracle. Everything below applies to both.

Applies to: Oracle Touch.

Short answerThe control board cannot read the coffee boiler temperature sensor (NTC). On this code the sensor reads as an open circuit: the wire has come off, the plug is loose or corroded, or the sensor itself has failed. Because it fails the self-test at power-on, the machine refuses to start until the sensor reads again. Breville does not publish this code table, so the meaning comes from third-party service tables.

How to fix ER05

  1. Switch the machine off at the wall, wait 60 seconds and switch it back on. A one-off reading glitch clears; a real open circuit comes straight back.
  2. Reaching the coffee boiler temperature sensor (NTC) plug means opening the machine, which is technician work. A technician would check that plug on the control board for corrosion or heat marks and test the sensor circuit. Tell them the code you see.
  3. Look under and around the machine, from the outside, for water trails. Moisture on a connector can read as an open or short circuit; a technician would find and fix the leak behind it, often a boiler o-ring or hose clip.
  4. If the code returns, the coffee boiler temperature sensor (NTC) or its wiring needs replacing by a technician.
  5. Afterwards, clear the stored error (see how to read the error log below) so you can tell whether it recurs.

When to stop and call a repairer

Stop and book service if you see water leaking, a burning smell or any scorch marks. Do not open the machine yourself.

Worth repairing?Often yes for a single sensor, but Breville does not publish repair costs. Get a quote first, especially on an older machine.

How to check the error log

Switch the machine off at the wall. Hold the front Power button, switch the wall power back on and release when the logo appears. Enter the service password 00000, then open Error Counter (stored faults) or Live Debug (live temperatures and water levels). One technician video says the entry method differs between machines built before and after 2018, so if this does not work, do not keep trying.

Clear the log after a repair so you can tell whether the fault has really gone.

Beyond the fix

Did you knowThe Oracle Touch lets you set shot water temperature by coffee origin and roast. That relies on the electronic PID control reading the brew boiler temperature accurately.

Tips and tricks

  • A technician video shows entering the service menu by holding the power button while plugging in; the method varies by machine build year. Note the stored errors, clear them and restart to see which return.technician video
  • Only for the two symptoms where the manual says so, a machine that is on but will not operate or steam pouring from the group head: switch off, wait 60 minutes, switch back on. For an Operation Error message the manual says to contact Breville.manufacturer manual
  • Use cold, filtered water. The manual says distilled or demineralised water may affect the taste of the coffee, and links non-stop pumping and wet steam to such water.manufacturer manual

Common mistakes

  • Clearing or ignoring the stored error without noting which code and how often it appeared, which loses the best clue for a technician.
  • Assuming one forum fix applies to every ER code. The same word-for-word code on a Barista Touch can point to a different part.

Easily confused with

  • On the Barista Touch BES880, ER05 is reported as the milk jug sensor, not the coffee boiler. Check your model before following a Barista Touch guide.

Questions

What does ER05 mean on the Breville / Sage Oracle Touch?

Coffee boiler temperature sensor not detected at startup. The control board cannot read the coffee boiler temperature sensor (NTC).

Can I fix ER05 myself?

DIY difficulty: hard. Switch the machine off at the wall, wait 60 seconds and switch it back on. A one-off reading glitch clears; a real open circuit comes straight back. Reaching the coffee boiler temperature sensor (NTC) plug means opening the machine, which is technician work. A technician would check that plug on the control board for corrosion or heat marks and test the sensor circuit. Tell them the code you see.

How much does it cost to fix ER05?

Not published by Breville. Ask an authorised service centre for a quote. Not published by Breville. Ask an authorised service centre for a quote.

Is it worth repairing?

Often yes for a single sensor, but Breville does not publish repair costs. Get a quote first, especially on an older machine.

ER05 during startup or during use?

Breville / Sage Oracle Touchs report ER05 during the power-on self-test. That timing is a useful clue when narrowing the cause.

Can I keep using the machine with ER05 showing?

Usually you can finish the drink you are making, but do not ignore it — the underlying fault rarely heals itself. Work through the cheap checks first.

Will ER05 clear on its own?

Rarely. A reset or power cycle is worth one try, but ER05 with a "hard" difficulty rating almost always means a failed component that has to be replaced.

How long does the repair take?

This one is a bench repair for most owners — the teardown, test and reassembly are the bulk of the work, not the part itself.

How reliable is this page?Breville and Sage do not publish a table of error codes for these machines in the documents we found. The meanings on this page come from third-party repair references and owner reports, so treat them as lower confidence. If your machine shows a text alert, follow the on-screen text first.
