Same code, same fix on the Oracle. Everything below applies to both.
Applies to: Oracle Touch.
How to fix ER13
- Switch the machine off at the wall, wait 60 seconds and switch it back on. A one-off reading glitch clears; a real open circuit comes straight back.
- The temperature sensor is inside the steam wand. Clean the wand and tip as the manual describes and check the wand is not kinked or twisted at its base. If the code persists, a technician would check or replace the wand assembly, which carries the sensor.
- Look under and around the machine, from the outside, for water trails. Moisture on a connector can read as an open or short circuit; a technician would find and fix the leak behind it, often a boiler o-ring or hose clip.
- If the code returns, the steam wand temperature sensor (NTC) or its wiring needs replacing by a technician.
- Afterwards, clear the stored error (see how to read the error log below) so you can tell whether it recurs.
When to stop and call a repairer
Stop and book service if you see water leaking, a burning smell or any scorch marks. Do not open the machine yourself.

How to check the error log
Switch the machine off at the wall. Hold the front Power button, switch the wall power back on and release when the logo appears. Enter the service password 00000, then open Error Counter (stored faults) or Live Debug (live temperatures and water levels). One technician video says the entry method differs between machines built before and after 2018, so if this does not work, do not keep trying.
Clear the log after a repair so you can tell whether the fault has really gone.
Beyond the fix
Tips and tricks
- After each use, clean the wand and tip with a damp cloth and purge it right away. Breville says skipping this may affect milk texturing.manufacturer manual
- Soak a blocked wand and tip in the supplied cleaning powder solution for 20 minutes, rinse, refit the tip and run steam for 10 seconds.manufacturer manual
- Leaving the wand in a jug of water when idle reduces the risk of blockages. Clear tip holes with the supplied cleaning tool, only once steaming has stopped.manufacturer manual
Common mistakes
- Skipping the wipe and purge after milk, then blaming the sensor when residue builds up.
- Assuming one forum fix applies to every ER code. The same word-for-word code on a Barista Touch can point to a different part.
Easily confused with
- Weak or missing steam with no code can be a blocked wand tip, which the manual covers under cleaning.

Questions
What does ER13 mean on the Breville / Sage Oracle Touch?
Steam wand temperature sensor not detected at startup. The control board cannot read the steam wand temperature sensor (NTC). On this code the sensor reads as an open circuit: the wire has come off, the plug is loose or corroded, or the sensor itself has failed. Because it fails the self-test at power-on, the machine refuses to start until the sensor reads again. Breville does not publish this code table, so the meaning comes from third-party service tables.
Can I fix ER13 myself?
DIY difficulty: hard. Switch the machine off at the wall, wait 60 seconds and switch it back on. A one-off reading glitch clears; a real open circuit comes straight back. The temperature sensor is inside the steam wand. Clean the wand and tip as the manual describes and check the wand is not kinked or twisted at its base. Is it worth repairing?
Often yes for a single sensor, but Breville does not publish repair costs. Get a quote first, especially on an older machine.
ER13 during startup or during use?
Breville / Sage Oracle Touchs report ER13 during the power-on self-test. That timing is a useful clue when narrowing the cause.
Can I keep using the machine with ER13 showing?
Usually you can finish the drink you are making, but do not ignore it — the underlying fault rarely heals itself. Work through the cheap checks first.
Will ER13 clear on its own?
Rarely. A reset or power cycle is worth one try, but ER13 with a "hard" difficulty rating almost always means a failed component that has to be replaced.
How long does the repair take?
This one is a bench repair for most owners — the teardown, test and reassembly are the bulk of the work, not the part itself.
