How to fix ER26
- Switch off at the wall immediately and let the machine cool for at least 60 minutes.
- Switch back on and watch the heat-up. If it reaches temperature normally and the code does not return, treat it as a one-off and descale as the manual describes.
- If it returns, technician sources point to a leaking steam probe seal, where steam heats the sensor cable and gives false overheat readings. Checking and replacing the probe o-rings means opening the machine, so it is a technician job.
- If the machine overheats again or steam pours from the group head at idle, a technician source says the triac board may be latched on. That is a board replacement, not a cleaning job.
- If the machine will not heat at all after an overheat, a technician source says a protective thermal fuse may have opened. Replacing it needs the machine opened up, so it is technician work.
Checking for scale trails or hissing at the probe port, and replacing the probe o-rings, means taking the cover off, so it is technician work.
One technician video says repeated overheating can open the thermal fuse, after which the machine stops heating. Fuse and triac board work is also technician-level. Breville does not publish prices, so get a quote and compare it with a refurbished unit.
When to stop and call a repairer
Do not keep running a machine that repeats an overheat code. Latched heaters can boil dry and damage the boiler and wiring.

How to check the error log
Switch the machine off at the wall. Hold the front Power button, switch the wall power back on and release when the logo appears. Enter the service password 00000, then open Error Counter (stored faults) or Live Debug (live temperatures and water levels). One technician video says the entry method differs between machines built before and after 2018, so if this does not work, do not keep trying.
Clear the log after a repair so you can tell whether the fault has really gone.
