What the lights on a De’Longhi Magnifica S mean

The Magnifica S does not show text messages or numeric error codes. Its panel has a row of icons, and the meaning comes from which icon is lit and whether it is steady or flashing. The numeric codes quoted on some repair sites (1101, 1454, 3963) are not in the manuals we read.

Models covered: the ECAM22.110, per De’Longhi’s official manual for the 7-icon panel. That manual also covers the ECAM20.11X, 21.11X (including the ECAM21.117) and 22.11X families. Not covered: the Dinamica, the Magnifica S Smart and the Evo, whose manuals we did not read. We also could not tie the 5-LED panel variants (ECAM22X.2Y and 22X.3Y) to a marketing name, so do not assume they match the Magnifica S. Our Magnifica Dinamica pages are separate, and this page does not cover them.

Icon, state and what to do

Our wording, not De’Longhi’s. The meaning of most icons is stated in the manual text. The steady or flashing detail for the triangle combinations and for one grounds state was read from illustrations. We rate that detail medium confidence. Check your own manual.

IconStateWhat De’Longhi’s manual saysWhat to do
TemperatureFlashingThe machine is heating. It goes out when ready.Wait. The coffee lights come on when it is ready.
SteamSteadySteam is selected.Nothing to fix.
SteamFlashingThe machine wants the dial turned.Turn the hot water and steam dial as the manual describes.
Grounds containerSteadyThe container needs to be inserted.Remove the tray and insert the container, as the manual describes.
Grounds containerFlashingThe container is full.Empty the container and the drip tray, clean them and refit. Empty the container whenever you remove the tray, even if it looks nearly empty, or it can overfill and clog.
Water tankSteadyThe tank is missing or not seated.Push the tank in until it clicks.
Water tankFlashingThere is not enough water.Fill the tank and push it in until it clicks.

The triangle (general alarm)

The triangle is read together with the other icons. States here are medium confidence, read from illustrations.

LightsWhat De’Longhi’s manual saysWhat to do
Triangle flashing, aloneThe infuser was not put back after cleaning.Unplug the machine, then refit the infuser following the manual’s infuser section.
Triangle steady, aloneThe inside is very dirty.Clean it thoroughly. If the triangle stays on, contact a service centre.
Grounds steady, triangle flashingEither the beans have run out, or the pre-ground funnel is clogged.Fill the bean container, or clear the funnel with a brush as the manual shows.
Grounds and triangle flashingToo much coffee was used.Choose a milder taste, or use less pre-ground coffee.
Grounds flashing, alonePre-ground was chosen but none was put in the funnel.Add pre-ground coffee.
Grounds, tank and triangle all flashingThe grind is too fine, so coffee is slow or absent. The manual treats an air bubble from the water filter the same way. With the mill running, turn the grind dial one click toward 7 and repeat after two coffees. If it is still slow, run water through the milk-frothing unit with the steam dial at I, as the manual describes.

On the Magnifica S the manual separates this area into a flashing triangle and a steady triangle.

Descaling when the light flashes

Unplug the machine before removing parts. Descaler is a chemical: use the descaler De’Longhi specifies and follow the manual for your model. Our descale light page has more on reset questions and what we could not verify.

  1. With the machine on and ready, handle the trays, tank and filter as the manual instructs, and put a large container under the frothing unit and spouts.
  2. Wait for the coffee lights to be steady, then hold the rinse and descale button for 5 seconds. Its light goes steady and the steam light flashes. Turn the dial to I.
  3. After about 25 minutes the cycle pauses and the lights flash. Turn the dial to 0.
  4. Rinse 1: refill the tank to MAX, turn the dial to I, and let it run through the frothing unit and then the spouts.
  5. When the tank is empty and the lights flash, turn the dial to 0. Rinse 2: refit the filter if you use one, refill to MAX, turn the dial to I, and let it run through the frothing unit.
  6. When the steam light flashes at the end, turn the dial to 0 and top up the tank.

Container size: sources differ. The official manual we read says at least 1.8 litres. De’Longhi’s Australian FAQ, quoted on our descale page, says 2 litres. We cannot say which is right for your unit, so check your manual for the size it specifies. If a cycle is interrupted, for example by a power cut, the manual says to repeat it. Water in the grounds container afterwards is normal, per the manual.

5-LED panel variants: the meanings flip

A different manual, for the ECAM22X.2Y and 22X.3Y, describes a panel with five lights. For descale and the water tank, its steady and flashing meanings are the reverse of the 7-icon manual. In that manual a steady descale light means descaling is due and a flashing one means it is in progress. For the tank, steady means too little water and flashing means the tank is not in place. The grounds light also differs: steady means it needs emptying, flashing means it is not in place. Do not apply the table above to such a machine. Use the manual for your exact model number.

Is there a numeric code?

Not in the manuals we read. We searched both for 1101, 1454, 3963 and 1512 and found none. We found 1101, 1454 and 3963 only on third-party repair sites, and we could not check them against anything from De’Longhi, so we do not give meanings for them. For other brands, see our error code index.

When to stop and call service

We advise: unplug the machine before removing the infuser, trays or tank. If the triangle stays on after a thorough clean, contact a service centre, or a qualified technician. See all De’Longhi guides.

Beyond the fix

Did you knowThe Magnifica S manual lists a 1.8 litre tank and 15 bar pump pressure, and the panel uses icons only, with no numeric codes.

Questions

Does the De’Longhi Magnifica S have error codes?

The manuals we read show icons only, with no text messages and no numbers. You read the meaning from which icon is lit and whether it is steady or flashing. Numbers such as 1101, 1454 and 3963 appear on repair sites, but they are not in the manuals we read.

What does the flashing triangle mean on a Magnifica S?

It depends on what else is lit. A flashing triangle on its own points to the infuser not being put back after cleaning. A steady triangle on its own points to a very dirty interior. With the grounds icon it points to other causes, listed in the table above. These states were read from the manual’s illustrations, so check your own manual.

Why does my descale light mean something different on another De’Longhi?

The manual for the 5-LED panel variants (ECAM22X.2Y and 22X.3Y) uses the opposite pattern for descale and for the water tank. On the 7-icon Magnifica S panel, a flashing descale light means descaling is due. On the 5-LED panel, steady means due. Confirm against the manual for your exact model.

Does this page apply to the Dinamica or the Magnifica S Smart?

No. We did not read the Dinamica or Magnifica S Smart manuals, and we could not link the 5-LED manual to a marketing name.
