GE dryer and dishwasher diagnostic mode: what GE actually publishes
Short answer: we found no consumer-facing GE document that gives a key sequence for diagnostic mode, on either dryers or dishwashers. This page sets out what GE does publish, what the word “diagnostic” refers to in its manuals, and where to go instead.
What we checked
We limited ourselves to public official sources: GE’s support articles and FAQ pages, and the owner’s manuals linked from GE’s own model pages. That covered several dishwasher manuals, three dryer manuals and GE’s dishwasher fault-code article. We did not access technician portals. If a sequence exists in a gated service document, we have not seen it, so we say “not publicly documented” and not “does not exist”.
What GE does publish
| Appliance | Public GE content | Our guide |
|---|---|---|
| Dishwasher | A fault-code article covering C1 to C8, PF, and FTD (also shown as F56). A number followed by H is a Delay Start indicator. GE notes that not every code appears on every model. | GE dishwasher codes guide |
| Profile UltraFast washer-dryer combo | Two codes: 353 (lint filter) and 18 (drain pump filter), shown through the unit’s help indicator. | Code 353 on the Profile combo |
| Standalone dryer | The manuals we read have a troubleshooting section but no code table and no diagnostic mode. A flashing Start/Pause light means the dryer is paused, not faulted. | GE dryer codes guide |
The 353 and 18 codes apply to the combo unit only, not to standalone dryers.
What “diagnostic” means in GE manuals
In the GDF510 and GDF520 series dishwasher manuals and the three dryer manuals we checked, the only match is a warranty paragraph. It says service may use the onboard data port so a technician can diagnose a problem quickly, and that owners can ask the technician not to send that data to GE. That is a technician’s tool, not a consumer mode.
One older dishwasher manual, from a much earlier generation of machines, uses the phrase “display diagnostic codes” as a heading over its ordinary messages: reset, power failure, low water, drain pump and temperature. It is a list of messages the machine shows to you, not a mode you switch on.
Why we do not print forum sequences
Forum posts and repair videos describe key holds, pad presses or knob turns, and they disagree by platform. One poster reported that the published sequence did not work at first. We rate this material as low confidence, so we do not reproduce any sequence or button combination here. Technician service manuals appear to be written per model, which is the right place for entry steps. A service mode may energize parts such as pumps or heaters, which is our inference, not a GE statement. That is a further reason to avoid steps we cannot verify.
Safety and getting service
GE’s dryer manuals tell owners to unplug the appliance or turn off the circuit breaker before servicing, because pressing Power or Start/Pause does not disconnect power. They also say not to run an appliance that is damaged, partly taken apart, or missing parts, and to leave installation and service to a qualified installer or service agency. For codes C3 and C7 that persist, GE’s dishwasher code article says to cut power at the breaker for about 30 seconds, reset, and contact service if it persists.
To book repair, use the service page on GE Appliances’ website (geappliances.com/service, per the GFD85 dryer manual). Some manuals list other contacts, so check any number against GE’s site before calling. We do not print a phone number here because two different numbers appear in the manuals we read, so check which applies to your model and year. Have the model and serial numbers ready.
Beyond the fix
Tips and tricks
- GE's published reset for blinking lights, beeping or power surges is Start/Reset, wait 2 minutes, then breaker off for 30 seconds.manufacturer manual
- GE says lights and beeps mean different things by model, so use your model's owner's manual.manufacturer manual
- For a stuck 999 on listed models, GE publishes a reset.manufacturer manual
Common mistakes
- Following a key sequence from a forum for a different model.
- Treating a technician test mode as a harmless reset.

Questions
How do I put a GE dishwasher or dryer into diagnostic mode?
We could not find a consumer-facing GE document that gives a key sequence. The owner’s manuals and support pages we read do not describe one. Technician service manuals appear to exist and are specific to each model, but we have not seen them on a public GE page.
Is there a GE diagnostic mode codes PDF I can download?
We did not find an official public PDF. Pages that advertise a service manual download for GE dishwashers are not a reliable substitute, and we do not link to them. Your owner’s manual and GE’s code article for dishwashers are the public documents.
What does “diagnostic” mean in a GE manual?
In the owner’s manuals we read, it appears in the warranty section, where GE says a technician may use the appliance’s onboard data port to diagnose a problem quickly. One older dishwasher manual also uses it as a heading for its ordinary display messages. Neither is a mode you enter.
Why not just list the button sequences from forums?
Posts we saw conflict by platform, and in one case the poster said the published sequence did not work at first, so we cannot verify them. A service mode may also energize parts such as pumps or heaters. That is our inference, not a GE statement, so we leave the sequences out.
