Philips LatteGo problems: milk, leaks and weak coffee
This page covers symptoms without an error code: milk that will not froth, milk or water leaking, and coffee that is watery or not hot enough. It follows what Philips writes in its manuals for the LatteGo series 4300 and 5400, and, for the 3200, from a third-party copy (medium confidence).
Models covered: Part A uses the official Philips 4300/5400 manual (2025 edition), which lists LatteGo on the EP4341, EP4343, EP4346, EP4349, EP5441, EP5443, EP5444, EP5446 and EP5447. Part B uses the EP3243 manual (a 3200 model) as copied on a third-party site, so confidence there is medium. We found no 2200 manual we could download, so this page gives no 2200 remedies. The 2200/3200 quick start guide has no remedies in it. For numbered codes and warning lights, see our LatteGo error codes and lights page, the Saeco and Philips troubleshooting page, the Philips / Saeco codes and the error code index.
Safety: unplug the machine before removing parts or cleaning. Our advice: if a leak persists after the checks below, stop using the machine and get it serviced.
Start here: rebuild and wash the LatteGo
Philips gives the same two main causes for both no froth and a leaking container: the parts are not clicked together, or they are dirty. Philips does not rank these causes. Our advice is to rebuild and wash the unit before looking for any other fault.
- The LatteGo has three parts: milk container, frame and storage lid. Put the container and frame together before you add milk.
- Make sure both parts are clean before joining them.
- Hook the top edge of the container onto the frame's upper hook, then press the base in until it clicks.
- Fill only up to the maximum mark. Philips advises milk straight from the fridge for the best result. The listed capacity is 250 ml.
- Angle the LatteGo toward the hot water spout, then push it in until it locks.
Part A: Series 4300 and 5400 (official manual)
| Symptom | Cause per Philips | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Milk does not froth | Not assembled correctly. Container or frame dirty. Milk type not suitable. | Check for the click when joining the parts. Take them apart and rinse under the tap or in the dishwasher. Philips says it got good froth from semi-skimmed or full-fat cow's milk and from lactose-free milk. |
| Milk leaks from the bottom of the LatteGo container | Frame and container not joined correctly. Dirty parts. | Rebuild with the hook first, then press until it clicks. Wash both parts. |
| Machine seems to be leaking | Rinse water going to the drip tray is normal. Other causes: a full drip tray, a tank not fully inserted, a dirty brew group, a machine that is not level. | Empty the drip tray daily, or when the red indicator pops up. A cup under the spout catches rinse water. Refit the tank, clean the brew group, and check the machine stands level. |
| Coffee is watery | Brew group dirty or in need of lubrication. Machine still adjusting itself. Grinder set too coarse. | Rinse and dry the brew group, then lubricate it. After first use, new beans or a long idle period, brew 5 cups. Or set the grinder finer, then make 2 or 3 drinks to taste the change. |
| Coffee is not hot enough | Temperature set too low. Cold cup. Milk added. | Set the temperature to maximum in Settings. The manual offers 3 brew temperatures. Warm the cup with hot water first. Adding milk always lowers the temperature. |
| No coffee, or very slow | AquaClean filter not prepared or clogged. Grinder too fine. Brew group dirty. Spout holes dirty. Pre-ground compartment blocked. Limescale. | Prepare or replace the filter (Philips says every 3 months). Clean the brew group. Clear the spout holes with a pipe cleaner or needle. For a blocked compartment, switch off, remove the brew group and push a spoon handle through. Descale when the machine asks. |
| Brew group cannot be removed or inserted | Not stated as a single cause. | Close the door, refit the tank, and switch the machine off and on. To insert it, leave the group out and unplug the machine for 30 seconds. |
| Loud noise | Some noise is normal. If it changes: dirty brew group or one that needs lubrication, unprepared filter, tank not fully seated. | Clean and lubricate the brew group. Philips gives clean weekly and lubricate every 2 months as the routine. Reseat the tank and prepare the filter. |
| Coffee residue in a new machine | Normal, from factory testing. | No action needed. |
The grounds container message is covered on its own page: empty drip tray and grounds container message.
Part B: Series 3200 (EP3243 manual copy, medium confidence; no 2200 manual found)
These rows come from pages 19 to 22 of the EP3243 manual as hosted on manua.ls. The text is Philips's, but we could not check it against an official PDF. Where the rows match Part A we say so. The differences we found are listed in the table.
| Symptom | Cause per the EP3243 copy | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Milk does not froth | Same three causes as Part A: assembly, dirt, milk type. | Check the click, then clean the parts. The copy points back to its section on cleaning the LatteGo after every use. |
| Milk leaks from the bottom of the LatteGo container | Assembly only. The copy does not list dirt for this row. | Rebuild with the hook first and press until it clicks. |
| Coffee watery, not hot enough, no coffee or slow | The same causes as Part A. | Follow the Part A actions. |
| Grinds but no coffee | Pre-ground compartment blocked. | Switch off, take out the brew group and clear the compartment with a spoon handle. We did not find this as a separate row in the 4300/5400 text. |
The classic milk frother fitted to some other models (EP4321, EP4324, EP4327) has its own rows in the manuals. It is not a LatteGo, so we left it out.
Cleaning the LatteGo
From the 4300/5400 manual:
- After each use: you can run Quick milk clean with the LatteGo attached, or take it off and rinse it in running water or in the dishwasher. For Quick milk clean, put a cup under the spout, choose the Clean icon and follow the screen. Small jets of hot water come out. If you store the LatteGo with milk left in it, keep it in the fridge.
- Thorough clean: remove the LatteGo and pour out the milk. Use the release button to split the container from the frame. Wash every part in the dishwasher, or by hand in lukewarm water with washing-up liquid. Rebuild using the hook-and-click steps above.
- Dishwasher: the manual states the LatteGo is dishwasher safe. A figure marks which parts are dishwasher safe, but we could not read it, so we cannot say which parts are marked. According to the manual, the grounds container front panel is not dishwasher safe. For the 2200/3200, the quick start guide spec sheet says dishwasher-proof parts: yes (medium confidence).
- We found no rack position, temperature limit, descaler or chemical caution for the LatteGo. Check your own manual.
What we could not find
- A "machine does not turn on" row. Neither manual we read has one. We cannot promise a fix for a machine that will not switch on. The 4300/5400 manual mentions that the small plug must sit in the socket on the back, in the code 19 context. Unplug the machine before you check it.
- A standalone 2200 manual. We only reached it through the shared 2200/3200 quick start guide.
- Froth-level settings, milk smell, mould or hygiene advice. None appear in the tables we read.
Beyond the fix
Tips and tricks
- Assemble container and frame before adding milk: hook the top under the frame first, then press the bottom until it clicks.manufacturer manual
- Use the Quick milk clean programme after each use, or remove LatteGo and rinse it under the tap.manufacturer manual
- Philips names dirty parts as a second cause of poor froth, so take both pieces apart and wash them.manufacturer manual
Common mistakes
- Filling LatteGo before clicking container and frame together, which Philips says causes leaks.
Easily confused with
- Water under the machine can be normal rinse water, an overfull tray or a tank not fully seated rather than a LatteGo leak.

Questions
Why is my Philips LatteGo not frothing milk?
For the 4300/5400 series, Philips gives three causes. The container and frame may not be clicked together, either part may be dirty, or the milk type may not suit. Take it apart, rinse both parts, then rebuild it by hooking the top of the container under the frame and pressing the bottom until it clicks. Philips says its tests with semi-skimmed or full-fat cow's milk, and with lactose-free milk, gave good froth. The 3200 manual copy we read gives the same three causes (medium confidence).
Why does milk leak from the bottom of the LatteGo container?
The 4300/5400 manual gives two causes: the frame and container are not assembled properly, or the parts are dirty. The third-party EP3243 copy lists only the assembly cause (medium confidence). Rebuild the unit with the hook first and press until it clicks. Our advice: if milk still leaks after that, stop using it and contact Philips service.
Is a puddle under my Philips machine always a leak?
No. Philips says rinse water running into the drip tray is normal. The manual also lists an overflowing tray, a tank that is not fully inserted, a dirty brew group and a machine that is not level as causes of apparent leaking. Unplug before you check any of these. Our advice: if water keeps escaping after those checks, get the machine serviced.
Why is my LatteGo coffee weak or not hot?
For watery coffee, Philips points to a dirty brew group or one that needs lubrication, a machine still adjusting itself to new beans, or a grinder set too coarse. For lukewarm coffee it lists a low temperature setting, a cold cup, and the cooling effect of added milk. Both tables are in the 4300/5400 manual, and the EP3243 copy matches on these points (medium confidence).
