Samsung oven and induction hob symbols: what the icons mean
Our coverage is uneven. Induction hob symbols are documented from one Samsung manual, and oven symbols are thin. This page says which is which, so you know how far to trust it.
Scope: the induction hob table comes from one manual, for the Samsung NZ64H57479K (Australian edition). We read its text directly. The glyph shapes come from page renders, so we rate those as medium confidence. Treat the table as applying to that model line only. For ovens, the Samsung pages we could read support the control lock icon, the Hot indication and the Sabbath display, plus a few key procedures. We could not obtain a current user manual for any Samsung NE63 or NX60 range, so there is no full oven icon glossary here. Samsung's UK page also says codes and designs vary by model, so check your model number. If you want faults rather than symbols, see Samsung oven error codes and Samsung induction cooktop error codes. More Samsung help is on the Samsung page, and the whole site is indexed under error codes.
Safety: induction glass and oven surfaces stay hot after use. Treat any H or Hot indication as a burn warning. Before any service work, unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker. Faults go to Samsung service or a qualified technician.
Table 1: induction hob symbols (NZ64H57479K manual)
These meanings are for that Australian four-zone model. We did not obtain Samsung manuals for the US NZ30 and NZ36 hobs or the Polish NZ64F3NM1AB, so we do not claim the same symbols apply there.
| Symbol or key | What the manual says |
|---|---|
| P | Power boost. It sits above the top heat level, which is 15 on this model. Heat levels run from 1 to 15. Boost is limited to 10 minutes per zone, or 5 minutes on a fully bridged zone. Power sharing between paired zones can lower a zone's setting. |
| H or h | Residual heat. It stays lit until the zone has cooled, and it is a burn warning. If mains power is cut, the symbol clears, but the glass may still be hot. |
| L | Child lock. Hold the Lock sensor for about 3 seconds, then tap any sensor. On/Off stays active. |
| Pan symbol (U-like) | The symbol shows when the pan is unsuitable, too small or missing. The zone then shuts off after one minute. |
| 5E | A touch sensor was held for longer than 8 seconds. |
| Pause key | Drops all active zones to low power and restores them. Only Pause, Lock and On/Off respond meanwhile. Timers keep running. |
| Bridge key | Joins the left front and left rear zones into one large zone. |
| Ready Pan key | Preheats a pan. The manual gives no more detail than that in the parts we read. |
The manual also describes an overheat code for an empty, overheating pan, after which the hob switches off. The two-character glyph was hard to read in our render, so we do not transcribe it. The hob also has an automatic safety shutoff that ranges from 6 hours at levels 1 to 3 down to 1.5 hours at levels 10 to 15, and a cooling fan that keeps running after switch-off.
Table 2: oven and range symbols
Everything here comes from Samsung US support pages. Most of the key labels on these panels are named but not explained, so the table lists only what is explained.
| Display or icon | What Samsung says |
|---|---|
| Padlock icon, or Loc | Control lock. Samsung says it appears as a padlock, as the word Loc, or as both, depending on the model. Steps to switch it off are on the panel or in your manual. |
| Automatic panel lock | The panel locks itself during Self Clean, Twin Cooking and temperature probe use. |
| Hot | You tried a function while the oven was too hot for the panel to work. |
| SAb (or Sab) | Sabbath mode. On one button panel you hold Bake plus Up for 3 seconds after starting a bake, and the beeps and display changes stop. A different button panel uses Bake plus 1 held for 3 seconds. A dial panel uses an Options menu entry after you start Bake. The combination depends on the panel. |
Temp Adjust (an offset of up to 35 degrees) and Demo mode are entered by holding the Clock, Setting or Options key for 3 seconds, depending on the panel. Twin Cooking is Samsung's wording. Our inference (Samsung did not say so): it refers to dual-oven mode on Flex Duo ranges.
Not covered
We found no Samsung page or manual text that explains these, so we do not describe them: Wi-Fi or SmartThings indicator icons, the probe icon, the convection fan icon, self-clean icon shapes, and Flex Duo divider icons. We also found no official symbol page for the US NZ30 and NZ36 hobs or the Polish NZ64F3NM1AB.
The C-24 and E-0A codes on our code pages
Samsung's UK oven code page, which we read, lists C-d0, S-01, dC and dE, C-d1, C-20, C-21, C-22, Pr E, C-F0, C-F1, C-F2 and a row of dashes. We could not find an official Samsung page for C-24 or E-0A. See our oven code page and our induction cooktop code page, and read them with that in mind.
Beyond the fix
Tips and tricks
- Control Lock may appear as a padlock, the word Loc, or both, depending on model. Steps to turn it off are printed on the panel or in the manual.manufacturer manual
- Sabbath mode keys differ by panel: one NE63 page holds Bake and Up, and the dial panel uses the Options menu.manufacturer manual
Common mistakes
- Using one model's key combination on another. Samsung's pages show different Sabbath and lock procedures per panel type.
Easily confused with
- Hot on the display means the oven is too hot for that function, not a fault.

Questions
What does the L or padlock on a Samsung appliance mean?
On the Samsung NZ64H57479K induction hob, L means child lock. You hold the Lock sensor for about 3 seconds, then tap any sensor, and L appears. The On/Off sensor still works. On Samsung ovens and ranges, a padlock icon, the word Loc, or both show that the control lock is on. Which one you see depends on the model. Steps to switch it off are on the panel or in your manual. Our advice: do not assume the hob and oven methods are the same, and do not assume L and Lo are interchangeable. Our Polish model notes list Lo, which we have not checked against a Samsung manual.
What does 5E or the pan symbol mean on a Samsung induction hob?
On the NZ64H57479K, 5E appears when a touch sensor has been held down for longer than 8 seconds. The pan symbol, a U-like shape, appears when the cookware is unsuitable, too small or missing. The zone then switches off after 1 minute. We read the glyph shapes from page renders, so the exact drawing on your hob may differ.
What does SAb mean on a Samsung oven?
SAb is the display for Sabbath mode. In the Samsung US pages we read, the key combination depends on the panel. Two button-style panels use Bake plus another key held for 3 seconds, and a dial panel uses an Options menu entry. Our advice: do not copy one combination onto a different panel. Check the Samsung page or manual for your exact model number.
Why does my Samsung oven panel lock by itself?
The panel can lock itself during certain functions. Samsung names Self Clean, Twin Cooking and the temperature probe. Its stated reason is protection from excess heat and from children. If the display shows Hot, you tried a function while the oven was too hot for the panel to work. Our advice: wait for the oven to cool.
