The Breville / Sage Oracle shows this code with identical meaning and fix as the Oracle Touch. Full guide for ER14.
Applies to: Oracle.
How to fix Error 14
- Switch the machine off at the wall, wait 60 seconds and switch it back on. A one-off reading glitch clears; a real open circuit comes straight back.
- The temperature sensor is inside the steam wand. Clean the wand and tip as the manual describes and check the wand is not kinked or twisted at its base. If the code persists, a technician would check or replace the wand assembly, which carries the sensor.
- Look under and around the machine, from the outside, for water trails. Moisture on a connector can read as an open or short circuit; a technician would find and fix the leak behind it, often a boiler o-ring or hose clip.
- If the code returns, the steam wand temperature sensor (NTC) or its wiring needs replacing by a technician.
- Afterwards, clear the stored error (see how to read the error log below) so you can tell whether it recurs.
When to stop and call a repairer
Stop and book service if you see water leaking, a burning smell or any scorch marks. Do not open the machine yourself.

How to check the error log
Leave the machine plugged in but switched off. Press and hold 1 CUP, 2 CUP and POWER together for at least one second. After the long beep the LCD shows the firmware version (starts with "Fr"). Press the SELECT dial once to open Error Storage, then rotate it to step through errors 1 to 32 and the stored count for each. Scroll past error 32 to "ErSt" and hold SELECT for 3 seconds to clear the log.
Clear the log after a repair so you can tell whether the fault has really gone.
Beyond the fix
Tips and tricks
- After each use, clean the wand and tip with a damp cloth and purge it right away. Breville says skipping this may affect milk texturing.manufacturer manual
- Leaving the wand in a jug of water when idle reduces the risk of blockages. Clear tip holes with the supplied cleaning tool, only once steaming has stopped.manufacturer manual
- Only for the two symptoms where the manual says so, a machine that is on but will not operate or steam pouring from the group head: switch off, wait 60 minutes, switch back on. For an Operation Error message the manual says to contact Breville.manufacturer manual
Common mistakes
- Skipping the wipe and purge after milk, then blaming the sensor when residue builds up.
- Assuming one forum fix applies to every ER code. The same word-for-word code on a Barista Touch can point to a different part.
Easily confused with
- Weak or missing steam with no code can be a blocked wand tip, which the manual covers under cleaning.

Questions
What does Error 14 mean on the Breville / Sage Oracle?
Steam wand temperature sensor lost during operation. The control board cannot read the steam wand temperature sensor (NTC). On this code the sensor reads as an open circuit: the wire has come off, the plug is loose or corroded, or the sensor itself has failed. Because it dropped out mid-cycle, a loose or heat-damaged connection is the most likely cause. Breville does not publish this code table, so the meaning comes from third-party service tables.
Can I fix Error 14 myself?
DIY difficulty: hard. Switch the machine off at the wall, wait 60 seconds and switch it back on. A one-off reading glitch clears; a real open circuit comes straight back. The temperature sensor is inside the steam wand. Clean the wand and tip as the manual describes and check the wand is not kinked or twisted at its base. Is it worth repairing?
Often yes for a single sensor, but Breville does not publish repair costs. Get a quote first, especially on an older machine.
When does Error 14 typically show up?
Breville / Sage Oracles report Error 14 while brewing or steaming. That timing is a useful clue when narrowing the cause.
Can I keep using the machine with Error 14 showing?
Usually you can finish the drink you are making, but do not ignore it — the underlying fault rarely heals itself. Work through the cheap checks first.
Will Error 14 clear on its own?
Rarely. A reset or power cycle is worth one try, but Error 14 with a "hard" difficulty rating almost always means a failed component that has to be replaced.
How long does the repair take?
This one is a bench repair for most owners — the teardown, test and reassembly are the bulk of the work, not the part itself.
