Breville / Sage Oracle Error 16: temperature sensor short circuit

Error 16 means: Steam wand temperature sensor short circuit during operation.

The Breville / Sage Oracle shows this code with identical meaning and fix as the Oracle Touch. Full guide for ER16.

Applies to: Oracle.

Short answerThe steam wand temperature sensor (NTC) is reading as a short circuit: the board sees near-zero resistance, which a healthy sensor does not produce. Technician sources name water bridging the sensor contacts (a leak or steam at the probe seal) and a failed sensor as the likely causes. Because it happened during operation, heat or steam reaching the connector is a plausible cause. Breville does not publish this code table, so the meaning comes from third-party service tables.

How to fix Error 16

  1. Switch off at the wall and unplug. Leave the machine for an hour so any moisture dries, then try again. A short that clears after drying suggests a leak to find.
  2. Deep-clean the steam wand and tip as the manual describes and dry the machine. If the code recurs, a technician would check or replace the wand assembly.
  3. A technician would replace any leaking o-rings at the boiler fittings and sensor probes; the leak, not the sensor, may be the true fault.
  4. If the code persists after everything is dry, the steam wand temperature sensor (NTC) needs replacing by a technician.
  5. Afterwards, clear the error log and run a full heat-up and a shot to confirm.

When to stop and call a repairer

If you see scorch marks, smell burning, or the machine trips your GFCI / RCD, stop: that is an electrical fault, not just a sensor.

Worth repairing?Often yes, but Breville does not publish repair costs. If a leak has soaked the control board, get a quote before spending anything.

How to check the error log

Leave the machine plugged in but switched off. Press and hold 1 CUP, 2 CUP and POWER together for at least one second. After the long beep the LCD shows the firmware version (starts with "Fr"). Press the SELECT dial once to open Error Storage, then rotate it to step through errors 1 to 32 and the stored count for each. Scroll past error 32 to "ErSt" and hold SELECT for 3 seconds to clear the log.

Clear the log after a repair so you can tell whether the fault has really gone.

Beyond the fix

Did you knowMilk texturing stops at the chosen temperature using the wand's integrated sensor, so residue around it is worth keeping clean.

Tips and tricks

  • After each use, clean the wand and tip with a damp cloth and purge it right away. Breville says skipping this may affect milk texturing.manufacturer manual
  • Soak a blocked wand and tip in the supplied cleaning powder solution for 20 minutes, rinse, refit the tip and run steam for 10 seconds.manufacturer manual
  • Leaving the wand in a jug of water when idle reduces the risk of blockages. Clear tip holes with the supplied cleaning tool, only once steaming has stopped.manufacturer manual

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the wipe and purge after milk, then blaming the sensor when residue builds up.
  • Putting wand parts in the dishwasher; the manual says not to clean parts or accessories there.

Easily confused with

  • Weak or missing steam with no code can be a blocked wand tip, which the manual covers under cleaning.

Questions

What does Error 16 mean on the Breville / Sage Oracle?

Steam wand temperature sensor short circuit during operation. The steam wand temperature sensor (NTC) is reading as a short circuit: the board sees near-zero resistance, which a healthy sensor does not produce. Technician sources name water bridging the sensor contacts (a leak or steam at the probe seal) and a failed sensor as the likely causes. Can I fix Error 16 myself?

DIY difficulty: hard. Switch off at the wall and unplug. Leave the machine for an hour so any moisture dries, then try again. A short that clears after drying suggests a leak to find. Deep-clean the steam wand and tip as the manual describes and dry the machine. If the code recurs, a technician would check or replace the wand assembly.

How much does it cost to fix Error 16?

Not published by Breville. Ask an authorised service centre for a quote. Not published by Breville. Ask an authorised service centre for a quote.

Is it worth repairing?

Often yes, but Breville does not publish repair costs. If a leak has soaked the control board, get a quote before spending anything.

When does Error 16 typically show up?

Breville / Sage Oracles report Error 16 while brewing or steaming. That timing is a useful clue when narrowing the cause.

Can I keep using the machine with Error 16 showing?

Usually you can finish the drink you are making, but do not ignore it — the underlying fault rarely heals itself. Work through the cheap checks first.

Will Error 16 clear on its own?

Rarely. A reset or power cycle is worth one try, but Error 16 with a "hard" difficulty rating almost always means a failed component that has to be replaced.

How long does the repair take?

This one is a bench repair for most owners — the teardown, test and reassembly are the bulk of the work, not the part itself.

How reliable is this page?Breville and Sage do not publish a table of error codes for these machines in the documents we found.
