How to fix E13
- Let the machine sit for 30 to 60 minutes if the code mentions overheating. The Barista Touch manual says its thermal cut-out resets after cooling.
- Remove the hopper, empty it and check for a stone or a very oily, compacted bean layer at the burr throat.
- Clean the burrs and the chute with the brush, following the manual. Never wash burrs; moisture clogs them.
- Check the tamp fan / impeller under the burr is fitted and not stuck (Oracle models).
- Set the grind a little coarser, refit everything, and run a short grind with a small dose of beans.
- If the motor hums but does not turn with clean burrs, or the code returns, contact Breville or an authorised service centre. Do not open the machine.
When to stop and call a repairer
A burning smell means stop and let it cool; do not repeatedly retry a jammed motor.

How to check the error log
Open Settings on the touch screen, then About the Machine, then Software version. On that screen tap each bottom corner of the screen several times. Go back to About the Machine and a new Service center mode entry appears. Open it to view the error log.
Clear the log after a repair so you can tell whether the fault has really gone.
Beyond the fix
Tips and tricks
- Check the hopper has fresh beans and none are stuck at the opening. Rotate the portafilter left to stop the grind, dose and tamp cycle.manufacturer manual
- If grinding very fine seems to strain the motor, go coarser. Listen for a change in motor sound.repair guide
- Use whole roasted beans only. Avoid green or under-roasted beans, which can damage the burrs.manufacturer manual
Common mistakes
- Dialing the grinder too fine on new burrs, which adds strain without benefit.
- Letting the hopper run empty.
Easily confused with
- A grinder that runs with no output may be empty or jammed, which the manual separates from loud clicking.

Questions
What does E13 mean on the Breville / Sage Oracle Jet?
Grinder motor operation timed out before completing grind cycle. The grinder ran longer than it should without finishing the dose. Breville's manuals describe thermal cut-outs and warn about oil and foreign objects in the grinder, so a jam from beans, stones or compacted grounds, or a grind setting so fine that the motor labours, are plausible causes. Breville does not publish this code table.
Can I fix E13 myself?
DIY difficulty: easy. Let the machine sit for 30 to 60 minutes if the code mentions overheating. The Barista Touch manual says its thermal cut-out resets after cooling. Remove the hopper, empty it and check for a stone or a very oily, compacted bean layer at the burr throat.

Is it worth repairing?
Clearing a jam is free. For a motor, ask for a quote.
E13 during startup or during use?
Breville / Sage Oracle Jets report E13 while brewing or steaming. That timing is a useful clue when narrowing the cause.
Can I keep using the machine with E13 showing?
Generally yes — E13 is more of an annoyance than an emergency. Fix it when convenient; just do not let the cause sit for months.
Will E13 clear on its own?
Often, yes. The first step (let the machine sit for 30 to 60 minutes if the code mentions overheating. the barista touch manual says its thermal cut-out resets after cooling) clears a share of cases on its own. If the code comes straight back, the part is genuinely at fault.
How long does the repair take?
Fifteen to thirty minutes with basic tools, once you have the part.
