Same code, same fix on the Oracle. Everything below applies to both.
Applies to: Oracle Touch.
How to fix ER11
- Switch off at the wall and unplug. Leave the machine for an hour so any moisture dries, then try again. A short that clears after drying suggests a leak to find.
- Inspecting the group head temperature sensor (NTC) plug and the wiring near the boiler means opening the machine, which is technician work. A technician would look for a wet patch, white scale trails or a perished o-ring around the probe.
- A technician would replace any leaking o-rings at the boiler fittings and sensor probes; the leak, not the sensor, may be the true fault.
- If the code persists after everything is dry, the group head temperature sensor (NTC) needs replacing by a technician.
- Afterwards, clear the error log and run a full heat-up and a shot to confirm.
When to stop and call a repairer
If you see scorch marks, smell burning, or the machine trips your GFCI / RCD, stop: that is an electrical fault, not just a sensor.

How to check the error log
Switch the machine off at the wall. Hold the front Power button, switch the wall power back on and release when the logo appears. Enter the service password 00000, then open Error Counter (stored faults) or Live Debug (live temperatures and water levels). One technician video says the entry method differs between machines built before and after 2018, so if this does not work, do not keep trying.
Clear the log after a repair so you can tell whether the fault has really gone.
Beyond the fix
Tips and tricks
- Before inserting the portafilter, run water through the group head for about 5 seconds. This clears coffee residue and settles the water temperature before a shot.manufacturer manual
- Wipe the group head and shower screen with a damp cloth, and periodically run hot water with the basket and portafilter in place but no coffee.manufacturer manual
- Only for the two symptoms where the manual says so, a machine that is on but will not operate or steam pouring from the group head: switch off, wait 60 minutes, switch back on. For an Operation Error message the manual says to contact Breville.manufacturer manual
Common mistakes
- Clearing or ignoring the stored error without noting which code and how often it appeared, which loses the best clue for a technician.
- Opening the lid to poke at wiring or probes on a mains-powered machine. Technicians treat that as qualified work.
Easily confused with
- An on-screen Operation Error message is a generic fault notice in the manual, not one of these numbered codes. Check the service menu for the stored number.

Questions
What does ER11 mean on the Breville / Sage Oracle Touch?
Group head temperature sensor short circuit at startup. The group head temperature sensor (NTC) is reading as a short circuit: the board sees near-zero resistance, which a healthy sensor does not produce. Technician sources name water bridging the sensor contacts (a leak or steam at the probe seal) and a failed sensor as the likely causes. Because it failed at startup, a wet connector or a sensor that has already failed is plausible. Breville does not publish this code table, so the meaning comes from third-party service tables.
Can I fix ER11 myself?
DIY difficulty: hard. Switch off at the wall and unplug. Leave the machine for an hour so any moisture dries, then try again. A short that clears after drying suggests a leak to find. Inspecting the group head temperature sensor (NTC) plug and the wiring near the boiler means opening the machine, which is technician work. Often yes, but Breville does not publish repair costs. If a leak has soaked the control board, get a quote before spending anything.
ER11 during startup or during use?
Breville / Sage Oracle Touchs report ER11 during the power-on self-test. That timing is a useful clue when narrowing the cause.
Can I keep using the machine with ER11 showing?
Usually you can finish the drink you are making, but do not ignore it — the underlying fault rarely heals itself. Work through the cheap checks first.
Will ER11 clear on its own?
Rarely. A reset or power cycle is worth one try, but ER11 with a "hard" difficulty rating almost always means a failed component that has to be replaced.
How long does the repair take?
This one is a bench repair for most owners — the teardown, test and reassembly are the bulk of the work, not the part itself.
