Breville / Sage Oracle Touch ER27: overheated above target temperature

ER27 means: Group head overheated above target temperature.

Same code, same fix on the Oracle. Everything below applies to both.

Applies to: Oracle Touch.

Short answerThe group head heater got hotter than the controller asked for. Technician sources describe two possible causes: the heater kept running when it was told to stop (a triac on the power board latched on), or the sensor under-reads because of a leak or steam at the probe seal. The machine cuts power to protect itself, and a technician source says repeated overheating can open a thermal fuse.

How to fix ER27

  1. Switch off at the wall immediately and let the machine cool for at least 60 minutes.
  2. Switch back on and watch the heat-up. If it reaches temperature normally and the code does not return, treat it as a one-off and descale as the manual describes.
  3. If it returns, a technician would check the boiler fittings and sensor probe for leaks and replace perished o-rings.
  4. If the machine overheats again or steam pours from the group head at idle, a technician source says the triac board may be latched on. That is a board replacement, not a cleaning job.
  5. If the machine will not heat at all after an overheat, a technician source says a protective thermal fuse may have opened. Replacing it needs the machine opened up, so it is technician work.

When to stop and call a repairer

Do not keep running a machine that repeats an overheat code. Latched heaters can boil dry and damage the boiler and wiring.

How to check the error log

Switch the machine off at the wall. Hold the front Power button, switch the wall power back on and release when the logo appears. Enter the service password 00000, then open Error Counter (stored faults) or Live Debug (live temperatures and water levels). One technician video says the entry method differs between machines built before and after 2018, so if this does not work, do not keep trying.

Clear the log after a repair so you can tell whether the fault has really gone.

Beyond the fix

Did you knowThe group head on the Oracle Touch has its own embedded heating element, so an over-temperature code here concerns that element and its sensor rather than the main coffee boiler.

Tips and tricks

  • Note stored errors in the service menu, clear them and restart; a repairer says a genuine fault will reappear.technician video
  • A video shows the temperature sensor is replaced by unplugging, cooling and opening the machine, so it is a job for a qualified technician.technician video
  • Watch for hot water or steam appearing unprompted; that points to a switching fault and means unplugging at once.technician video

Common mistakes

  • Continuing to pull shots on a machine that is overheating.

Easily confused with

  • ER19 is the group head failing to warm, the opposite fault.

Questions

What does ER27 mean on the Breville / Sage Oracle Touch?

Group head overheated above target temperature. The group head heater got hotter than the controller asked for. Technician sources describe two possible causes: the heater kept running when it was told to stop (a triac on the power board latched on), or the sensor under-reads because of a leak or steam at the probe seal. Can I fix ER27 myself?

DIY difficulty: hard. Switch off at the wall immediately and let the machine cool for at least 60 minutes. Switch back on and watch the heat-up. If it reaches temperature normally and the code does not return, treat it as a one-off and descale as the manual describes.

How much does it cost to fix ER27?

Is it worth repairing?

Depends on the cause and on prices Breville does not publish. Get a quote and compare it with a refurbished unit on an older machine.

ER27 during startup or during use?

Breville / Sage Oracle Touchs report ER27 any time. There is no reliable pattern to when it appears — treat any occurrence as real.

Can I keep using the machine with ER27 showing?

Treat it as a stop-using signal: ER27 marks a fault that can damage the machine (or worse) if you keep running it. Do the safe first steps below, then stop.

Will ER27 clear on its own?

Rarely. A reset or power cycle is worth one try, but ER27 with a "hard" difficulty rating almost always means a failed component that has to be replaced.

How long does the repair take?

This one is a bench repair for most owners — the teardown, test and reassembly are the bulk of the work, not the part itself.

How reliable is this page?Breville and Sage do not publish a table of error codes for these machines in the documents we found. The meanings on this page come from third-party repair references and owner reports, so treat them as lower confidence. If your machine shows a text alert, follow the on-screen text first.
